A festive lantern team composed of farmers and a dragon lantern team
consisting of retired urban workers were performing at the annual temple
fair held on Jan. 9th in the lunar calendar on Langya Mountain in Chuzhou
City. Langya Mountain was covered with a timely snow during this temple
fair which made it extremely fascinating. Tourists who came to
participate in the temple fair were feasted not only on the folk-custom
artistic performance but also on the beautiful snow scene that was rare
to see in previous temple fairs.

Building innovation-oriented China: Premier

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-12 09:15:24

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Jan. 12 - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for pushing forward
the country's scientific progress and making endeavor to build an
innovation-oriented country at China's Fourth National Conference on
Science and Technology, which was concluded here on Wednesday.
Wen said China's medium and long-range scientific and technological
development program, recently issued by the State Council, was the
country's first overall scientific and technological plan since the
beginning of the new century, the first medium and long-range scientific
program under the condition of the socialist market economy, and a
programmatic document for the country's coming 15 years of scientific and
technological development.
He said in a speech made at a plenary meeting on Monday, which was held
during the convention of the National Conference on Science and
Technology, that the implementation of the medium and long-range
scientific and technological development program is important to
improving the country's competitive force.
China's development depends on two forces, he said: unswerving reform and
opening-up, and scientific and technological progress and innovation.
He asked all departments concerned to carefully implement China's medium
and long-range scientific and technological development program,
unremittingly follow up the scientific conception of development and the
strategies of rejuvenating the country by education and technology, and
endeavor to push forward scientific and technological progress and
innovation.
He said innovation was the soul of scientific and technological
development and the motive power for national development. Therefore,
innovation improvement is the primary choice for enhancing the nation's
competitive force.
In a bid to push forward the country's scientific and technological
development, five aspects should be paid attention to. First, technology
development on energy conservation, water resources and environment
protection should be given priority. Second, core technology and
intellectual property in equipment manufacturing industry and information
industry should be grasped.Third, development of biological technology
should be beefed up. Fourth, the development of space technology and
maritime technology should be enhanced. Fifth, research on fundamental
sciences and frontier sciences should be pushed forward.
Wen said to better implement the medium and long-range scientific and
technological development program, the reform on the country's scientific
and technological system must be vigorously pushed forward. Strategies on
how to make innovations should be stipulated and implemented. Investment
in scientific and technological sections must be increased and the
training of scientific and technological personnel should be strengthened.

Porcelains of twelve animal signs exhibited in the artwork center of the
National Museum of China appealed to visitors on Dec. 28. It is the first
exhibition in China to display twelve animal sign porcelains in a
concentrated way. Based on designs of finest porcelains in the National
Museum and some masterpieces of famous Qing (1616-1911AD) artists, this
collection set was elaborately copied by an appointed workshop in
Jingdezhen City during more than one year. Each of the works was handmade
and marked with a logo of the National Museum of China.

Surplus output capacity to become severer

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-26 14:06:35

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 26 (By Jia Quanxin) - At present, some sectors
in China are witnessing severer surplus output capacity and oil
demand-supply situation allows no optimism.
It was learned from the conference of centrally-governed enterprises'
chiefs held on Dec. 25 that although the macroeconomic environment is
conducive to the reform and development of centrally-owned enterprises
next year, there are quite a few contradictions and problems in the
current economic operation.
First of all, some sectors will run into more obvious surplus output
capacity. This year, as newly-built steel, construction material and
nonferrous metal projects commenced operation, there has been an
increasing evident contradiction between production capacity release and
demand decrease. Steel prices in the market are heading for stability at
present, but there are many uncertain factors that will affect the steel
market next year.
Influenced by the changes of market demands, the auto industry faced
fiercer competition and prices continued to drop. According to statistics
from the National Development and Reform Commission, the auto industry
has a surplus output capacity of 2 million units at present, with the
capacity under construction reaching 2.2 million units and the planned
output capacity amounting to 8 million units. As a result, the auto
industry will be confronted with severer challenges.
Second, structural contradiction will remain in the supply and demand of
crucial raw materials and energy. In 2006, coal output capacity will
continue to increase while consumer demand will grow at a slower pace.
The tight supply-demand situation will be alleviated on the whole but the
structural contradiction will still exist because of relatively tight
transport capacity of some railway lines. With a batch of projects to
complete and start operation, the tight power supply-demand will be eased
obviously. However, some regions will possibly see oversupply of electric
power, which will become a rigorous challenge for the power industry.
Influenced by factors such as increasing global demand, over speculation
in the market and unstable geopolitical situations, international oil
prices will remain on a high plateau next year. China will find it hard
to reverse the situation of dependence on crude oil import, and the
general oil supply-demand allows no optimism.

1936 Games in Berlin Height: 27 cm Weight: 908 grams.

2000 Games in Sydney Height: 72 cm Weight: 1,000 grams

2006 Games in Athens Height: 68 cm Weight: 700 grams

Dec.7 - A campaign was launched yesterday to find the perfect design for
the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch.
Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG)
announced that the solicitation period will run until February 28, 2006.
"Our concepts of the torch design are 'glory and dream, tradition and
modernity, culture and harmony,'" said Zhang Ming, deputy director of
BOCOG's Culture and Ceremonies Department.
"Design proposals for the Beijing Olympic torch are supposed to
artistically interpret the rich connotations of these concepts."
According to Zhang, submissions are also expected to display the
distinguishing features of the Beijing Games, namely "Chinese style,
cultural splendour and contemporary spirit," and to fully demonstrate the
vitality and passion of the torchbearers,
"BOCOG also requires that the proposed designs should be original and
creative, and that the torch incorporates state-of-the-art technology,"
Zhang added.
As stated by Zhang, anyone interested is welcome to contribute. The
request forms for proposals and other related documents can be downloaded
from beijing2008.com, the official BOCOG website.
"The final design of the torch will be announced to the public in the
middle of 2006 and the designers of the top three candidates will be each
awarded 50,000 yuan ((US$6,165)."
As for the torch relay route in 2008, Zhang said that BOCOG has finished
the plan with the IOC, but some final work still needs to be done.
"The complete torch relay route will be announced at the beginning of
2007," Zhang said.

www.chinanews.cn 2005-12-05 13:48:12

Shandong University's School of Nursing opened a special curriculum of
gesture language. At one of the classes on Dec. 2, sophomore students
were learning the gestures for "care for disabled persons" under the
direction of Ms. Li Jing from the art troupe of Jinan Disabled Persons'
Federation. The sign in the picture means "care for." According to
relevant authorities, Jinan has 80,000 hearing-impaired persons. These
people have serious problems when communicating with the medical staff
about their health status. Therefore, the School of Nursing and Jinan
Disabled Persons' Federation jointly opened a special curriculum on
gesture language to overcome the obstacles in communicating with the
disabled.

China a new actor of substance on world stage

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-17 13:50:17

Chinanews, Nov. 16 - The secretary general of Boao Forum for Asia, Long
Yongtu, said yesterday during a press interview that when a country's
economy was growing at its fastest rate, it would create the most trade
frictions. The trade frictions that now face China reflect the country's
competitiveness and its international trade position - an inevitable
phenomenon for its having grown and become stronger.
Long Yongtu said that trade frictions are common phenomena in
international trade. When one country's economy gets to its fastest
growth period, it will have relatively more frictions. Just like a new
actor of substance who is fighting an aging star for a spot on the stage
and there would be great conflict between the new and the old. In fact,
the trade frictions confronting China reflects China's competitiveness
and its stature in international trade - an inevitable consequence of
becoming strong and powerful. Survey shows that in 2004, the amount of
China's trade subject to anti-dumping investigation amounted to only 0.3%
of total trade volume and did not constitute the mainstream. Long
counseled that one must treat such matters calmly and rationally.
Regarding how Chinese industries can shake off their roles as "bottom
feeders" of the global economic food chain, Long Yongtu said that it was
a fact that multinationals controlled more than 75% of the world's
technology patents, brands. One must confront the reality that China sits
at the low-end of the production chain. However, from the development of
the entire society's point of view, one person, one company, one country
must transit from the "worker" phase to the "owner" phase and is part of
an objective, reasonable development process.
To change this reality, one must dare to innovate - innovate in
technology, innovate in structure, willing to spend a lot of effort,
plenty of investment to create one's own brands. Only when one has
proprietary brands can one escape the embarrassment of being "workers"
and complete the transformation of a large economy to a strong economy.

(Source: Xinhuanet)

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 - World oil prices fell to the lowest close on Friday
since July 21 amid an unseasonably warm weather and a depressed demand
wrought by this autumn's record high prices.

July 21, a 5 percent loss for the week.

69 cents to end at 54.99 dollars a barrel.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, heating oil for December fell 2
cents to close at 1.7235 dollars a gallon. December gasoline fell about 2
cents at 1.485 dollars a gallon. Natural gasrose 33.2 cents to 11.712
dollars per 1,000 cubic feet.
AccuWeather, a State College, Pa.-based weather forecaster, said warm air
will blanket most of the country this weekend beforecold weather finally
arrives next week. By the middle of next week, the Great Lakes and New
England should see freezing temperatures and possibly snow, AccuWeather
predicted.
The International Energy Agency revised downward its forecast of global
oil demand for 2005 Thursday from 83.4 million barrels per day to 83.3
million barrels per day. The agency also cut its estimate for 2006 world
oil demand to 85.01 million barrels a day, down 140,000 barrels.
US Energy Information Administration said Wednesday crude oil inventories
rose 4.5 million barrels to 323.6 million barrels in the week ended Nov.
