Native speakers dont have to concentrate heavily on the tones, and Shanghainese for Mandarin and
Cantonese speakers is not 'really easy' to speak.

No. 1 dragon head unveiled in Jiangsu

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-22 14:19:03

The sculpture of a dragon-headed fish, cited as world's No. 1 dragon
head, was unveiled in mid-July in the picturesque Yuwan Scenic Spot of
Jiangsu's Lianyungang, adding a new landmark view to the scenic spot. A
dragon-headed fish is a dragon with a fish's body. It is said to have
made its first visit to Lianyungang in the late Shang Dynasty (1765BC -
1122BC). The legend of a giant fish turning into a dragon in the East Sea
also came from Yuwan. The 15-meter high sculpture is the largest
dragon-headed fish sculpture in China.

Cosmetic surgery booming in China

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-15 13:36:15

(Source: CNN)

BEIJING, China - Life is good for 24-year-old Lucy Hao.
She has a part-time job as a freelance writer and an apartment in
Beijing. And her 15 minutes of fame have stretched into weeks as local
media documented her transformation.
Hao has become a living billboard for cosmetic procedures in China.
After four months and twelve operations, she now has a higher nose. And
her eyes are larger and rounder -- doctors removed the fold in her eyelid
to give her a more European look.
Hao also had breast implants and liposuction to take fat from the lower
buttocks, making the head-to-toe makeover.
Many of Hao's procedures are common enough in China. What's unusual is
the promotional nature of what is normally a private matter between
doctor and patient.
Hao told CNN she has an agreement with the hospital.
"I will be their spokeswoman after my operations, kind of like being an
advertisement," she said.
"I want more people to know about this hospital so that they will have
done what they need to improve themselves."
Neither the hospital nor Hao will reveal who paid for the some 50,000 USD
worth of operations.
But the Evercare Medical Institution, which serves an affluent minority,
wants more people to have work done here, rather than go abroad.
"Lucy will become a public image and make people realize that she has
become more beautiful because of surgeries performed by Chinese doctors,"
a doctor at the hospital said.
"This will improve the public recognition of Chinese plastic surgeons."
For an elite who travels outside China seeking an alternative aesthetic,
the pursuit of perfection includes an element of wanting to look more
Western.
Beauty and fashion editors notice another pattern for people who make a
living on their looks: looking international is bankable.

Drought threatens elks in Dafeng

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-04 14:04:26

Elks in Jiangsu Dafeng Elk National Nature Reserve are drinking from the
ditch on July 1, 2005. Since Mar. this year, the Reserve only recorded
60mm precipitation. About 1000 poplars died of the drought, and the
plants recover slowly, causing inadequate food and water for the elks. If
the dry weather continues, it will threaten the lives of 819 elks.

The Shanghu Lake Scenic Spot in Jiangsu's Changshu City welcomed 10,000
birds to dwell in its wetland on April 25. In recent years, this scenic
spot has paid much attention to environmental and ecological
construction, and has adopted varied measures to protect the environment
here. Its good water quality and environment attract birds to return to
this scenic spot after absenting themselves for years. Nowadays, there
are over 80 species of birds in this scenic spot, including precious
birds listed in national first-class protection such as scaly-sided
merganser, white stork and black stork.

"Eliminating sandstorms impossible in China"

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-18 14:45:16

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr.18 (By Zhao Shengyu) - Dusty weather and serious
sandstorms have raged in many parts of northern China since February,
especially in recent days. Though China has reinforced its control in
recent years, it is still impossible to eliminate sandstorms under the
current situation, said Liu Tuo, Director of the National Bureau to
Combat Desertification under the State Forestry Administration in an
interview on Monday.
Liu said that at present, there are four areas in the world where
sandstorms frequently occur, located respectively in Central Asia, North
America, Middle Africa and Australia. China is part of the area in
Central Asia. Sources of sandstorms that hit China originate not only
from desertified lands in northern China, but also from some foreign
countries. Particularly this year, the influence of sand sources from
outside of China has become greater. The 1.74 million square kilometers
of desertified lands and deserts in northern China cannot be reclaimed
and eliminated under current technical conditions. Therefore, China
cannot eliminate sandstorms due to both internal and external sand
sources.
When talking about the causes for the frequent sandy weather, he
explained that dusty days this year are more than those in previous
years, which, however, are still within the normal range compared to the
situations in past years but more serious in intensity.
