China a new actor of substance on world stage

Chinanews, Nov. 16 - The secretary general of Boao Forum for Asia, Long
Yongtu, said yesterday during a press interview that when a country's
economy was growing at its fastest rate, it would create the most trade
frictions. The trade frictions that now face China reflect the country's
competitiveness and its international trade position - an inevitable
phenomenon for its having grown and become stronger.
Long Yongtu said that trade frictions are common phenomena in
international trade. When one country's economy gets to its fastest
growth period, it will have relatively more frictions. Just like a new
actor of substance who is fighting an aging star for a spot on the stage
and there would be great conflict between the new and the old. In fact,
the trade frictions confronting China reflects China's competitiveness
and its stature in international trade - an inevitable consequence of
becoming strong and powerful. Survey shows that in 2004, the amount of
China's trade subject to anti-dumping investigation amounted to only 0.3%
of total trade volume and did not constitute the mainstream. Long
counseled that one must treat such matters calmly and rationally.
Regarding how Chinese industries can shake off their roles as "bottom
feeders" of the global economic food chain, Long Yongtu said that it was
a fact that multinationals controlled more than 75% of the world's
technology patents, brands. One must confront the reality that China sits
at the low-end of the production chain. However, from the development of
the entire society's point of view, one person, one company, one country
must transit from the "worker" phase to the "owner" phase and is part of
an objective, reasonable development process.
To change this reality, one must dare to innovate - innovate in
technology, innovate in structure, willing to spend a lot of effort,
plenty of investment to create one's own brands. Only when one has
proprietary brands can one escape the embarrassment of being "workers"
and complete the transformation of a large economy to a strong economy.
